When ageing IT equipment threatened the business security of Scotland’s largest door supplier, Finewood Joinery Limited, trade counter IT specialists Portal IT services were called upon to implement a new robust solution.

The Organisation

Finewood Joinery Limited is Scotland’s largest supplier of internal and external doors, operating from a four acre site in Falkirk with a 75,000sq ft factory unit, supplying builders’ merchants, housebuilders, Councils and DIY enthusiasts. With a stock of £1.4 million worth of doors, they offer the largest choice of styles and designs available, from their state-of-the art showroom which is open seven days a week. Founded in 1990, Finewood has grown rapidly and have increased its product portfolio to include a wide range of architrave including skirting, facings, casings and door stops, as well as wardrobe doors and garden furniture. Renowned for their friendly staff, they now distribute their products anywhere in Scotland.

The Challenge

In a business such as Finewood’s technology is critical. The hardware to run such applications as stock control, ordering, email and invoicing is crucial to the success of the firm. Any interruption to that hardware can have a catastrophic impact on the business with stock unaccounted for, orders misplaced and invoices not processed. Finewood felt that their reliance on an ageing Dell server with MDaemon mail server put their business at significant risk of failure. Along with their concerns over the reliability of the equipment, there were significant speed issues. When coupled with the lack of availability of replacements parts, it became evident that they needed to replace the ageing hardware with modern, more robust technology that would improve their business performance and not hinder it.

The Solution

Finewood turned to their existing technology supplier of 20 years Portal IT Services for advice. Portal, a specialist IT provider in the trade counter industry, recommended a Windows Small Business Server. The system is robust and, therefore, very reliable. It would easily provide the peace of mind that Finewood needed.

The Benefits

Immediately, Finewood benefited from the increased reliability of the system. The speed increased dramatically, which meant that they could process orders faster and had a much clearer view of their stock situation. The system also improved the lives of their mobile employees who benefited from much improved email systems.
